Nels
Johnson has devoted most of his 30-year career to developing creative
ways to reward performance through total compensation. Nels provides
clients with creative yet practical performance management and
compensation strategies that recognize and reward results.
Nels
began his career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, where he
worked in research until 1978. He moved to ReliaStar Insurance Company
(now ING) as director of financial planning and analysis. He eventually
oversaw the development of IS systems that supported human resources,
accounting, legal, and general services functions. In 1986, Nels was
promoted to director of compensation and benefits. In that role, he
directed the design and administration of compensation and benefit
programs for the national multi-line insurance carrier.
Nels
joined Grand Casinos, Inc. in 1992 as director of benefits and
compensation. He was responsible for creating compensation and benefit
programs for 18,000 people in four states, including corporate
headquarters and casino resort properties.
He founded Johnson Consulting in 1998. His expertise includes:

Incentive plan design
Equity-based compensation plans for senior executives and line employees
Employee benefit plan design and management
Health management programs
When
Johnson Consulting merged with Practical Leadership in 2000, Nels
became a partner in our organization. Nels also manages our sister
company, Practical Benefits, which provides our clients with employee
benefit solutions.
Nels holds a BS in economics from the University of Minnesota.
